History

Early in the year of 1928, Sister Anna L. Knox, formerly of Colorado, thought it proper to establish a Chapter for the Order of the Eastern Star in the town of Fairmount Heights, Maryland. Being a charitable organization, the purpose was to have a sister chapter to Fairmount Lodge No 92 and to engage in unified services to God and Man, standing as a beacon of light being ready to serve our community in religious, civic, and charitable activities.

After calling together several ladies who were wives, mothers, widows, daughters, and sisters of Master Masons, Sister Knox named the Chapter Columbine. She chose the name for the state flower of Colorado because of its beautiful shade of blue and distinctive pedals (the white and lavender Columbine, Aquilegia Caerules). Under the leadership of Myra Grand Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, Prince Hall Affiliated, located in Baltimore, Maryland; they met for one year awaiting a Charter. Grand Officers presiding at that time were Grand Worthy Matron Marietta Stewart, Grand Worthy Patron Charles W. Simms, Grand Associate Matron Nellie Paul, and Grand Associate Patron B. Wesley Davage.

On August 4, 1928 Columbine Chapter No. 46 was organized with a membership of seventeen. These charter members were working from the Amaranth book with the following officers: Anna L. Knox, RM; Walter W. Marr, RP; Sylvia McNeil, RAM; Ellen Reeves, Hon. AC; and Sallie McMillian, Hon. C. The points were Carrie Brooks- Charity; Jane Atwood-Herald; Ellen Gibson-Truth; and Alice H. Forrest- Faith. Other officers were Clara Brooks-Warder, Ella P. Williams-Sentinel, and Emmy Rayford-Pianist. Sallie Brooks and Bessie Paterson completed the roster. The Chapter was granted its Charter on August 3, 1929. Our last Charter member, PGM Sallie McMillian passed on January 7, 1999.

The first meeting was held at the Town Hall of Fairmount Heights on 61st Avenue and later moved to Fairmount Masonic Temple. Regalia and furniture were presented to the Chapter as each Matron ended their services in the East. Bus excursions, socials, and dinners highlighted each year as fundraising activities. The Knox- Brooks Youth Fraternity No. 9 was founded by Past Grand District Deputy Anna Mae Brown in 1962. It was named for our first Matron Anna Knox and Past Patron Phillip Brooks. In 2002 it was named Knox-Brooks-Carey in honor of PDDGM Margaret J. Carey who died in office. Members of the Chapter are appointed to chair the Youth Fraternity. Sister LaVerne Evans served as the Grand Chair, Knox-Brooks- Carey Youth Fraternity from 2009 until 2017. Sister Brenda Rance and Sister Pauline Patton were the Grand Co-Chair, Knox-Brooks-Carey Youth Fraternity from 2003-2009. As of October 2021, Columbine Chapter No. 46 had Seventy-Six members on roll. We are forever grateful to all Past Officers and members who have labored diligently through the years in Eastern Stardom to hold the banner of Columbine Chapter No. 46 and Myra Grand Chapter high.
